Welcome to Third Grade!
There are so many exciting things to learn and do in third grade. It is a huge year of transition and change on many different levels. Students are now considered "upper graders" at Curie. That means that they have the responsibility of being role-models for younger kids. They have different lunch routines and they can now play on the coveted "red equipment." They go to all of the assemblies with the fourth and fifth grade students and they can participate in the student council elections for the first time.
This year students will be learning cursive and memorizing their times tables. The math is very difficult and moves quickly. It is much different than second grade math. It is so important to help them at night(if possible) and see how they are doing. That is why I request that you sign their homework. That way, you can let me know if they are struggling with it or if they are getting it rather easily. Both cases would require modifications. It is also important to notice how long it is taking them to do the homework. Additionally, they are expected to do quite a few lengthy writing assignments.
This year we are focusing on increasing independence and responsibility. They need to remember to do their homework nightly, place it in their folders, and bring it to school. They need to work on time-management as they complete a book report and reading log each month. All of these things help to prepare them for fourth grade. Next year they will move into a classroom with approximately 35 students. That means that they do more work with less help from the teacher.
I look forward to a great year and getting to know all of you much better. The reason why we are so successful at Curie is because we have such incredible family involvement.
